The Story Behind Stablehouse Design

Sarah Delmonte is leading a garden design business established by her mother, Lyn Eglinton

Lyn has been creating much admired gardens throughout New Zealand for well over 30 years. Sarah describes Lyn’s plant knowledge as “outrageous in its breadth and complexity.

It’s this knowledge and experience that make Stablehouse Design, a seriously impressive service. They are the people to go to if you’re wanting to upgrade or establish a new garden or simply find a few beautiful plants. “A consultation with us about design; plant types and what you want out of your garden, is well worth doing before making any expensive mistakes.”

Sarah took over Stablehouse design in 2022. She left behind a corporate banking career in marketing and product development to study landscape design with the aim of learning on the job with her mother. Lyn is very much the “go to person” when it comes to choosing and sourcing plants and trees.

Clients come from all walks of life and are looking for help to create their own small bit of paradise. Usually, they are looking for maximum impact, with minimal work. “Help with a small urban courtyard, through to a rambling country garden that needs a spruce up.” Lyn is famous for her sculptural architectural lines allowing the play of light and shadow. This knowledge, gleaned over decades, means Stablehouse Design can source the right Plants for the local conditions, at cost-effective prices, and in bulk when needed. “We’re also well known for sourcing the unusual and hard to find,” says Sarah.

Every design responds to the specific site qualities and conditions, leading to harmonious and tranquil spaces. Clients are the gardeners and their ideas and requirements are essential. The designer merely reflects and interprets their needs. Perhaps the most important aspect is the plant knowledge we bring to the design process. Good gardens should look equally as wonderful in July as  in November. Shadow and light play a major role along with colour and form. Along with the knowledge our nursery holds many of the plants we use. We aim to create gardens that are affordable, timeless and enduring.
