PARASOLING TREES for Summer Shade

Why Put Up an Umbrella? Creating Natural Shade with the Right Trees

At Stablehouse Design, we believe that nature provides some of the best solutions for outdoor spaces. Instead of installing a traditional umbrella for shade, why not create a stunning natural canopy using trees? With the right selection and thoughtful planting, trees can offer a beautiful and practical alternative for shaded dining and relaxation areas. Here's how you can transform your outdoor space with trees.

The Right Tree for the Job

Creating natural shade is all about choosing the correct tree species. Some trees are better suited to forming the lush, leafy canopies you need to cover outdoor areas, such as dining spaces or patios. Here are a few top contenders:

  • Plane Trees: Known for their broad, spreading branches, Plane trees are fantastic for providing ample shade. When planted in groups or along a pergola frame, they create a wonderful, leafy ceiling under which you can enjoy outdoor meals or relaxation.
  • Pin Oaks: With their sturdy structure and wide-reaching branches, Pin Oaks are another excellent choice for creating shade. They offer rich foliage that turns vibrant colours in the autumn, adding beauty to your garden year-round.
  • Acers (Maples): While not all Acers are suitable, some varieties make fantastic shade trees. Their delicate, yet full canopies provide filtered light that’s perfect for a shaded, airy feel in your garden.

Always Site-Specific

At Stablehouse Design, we understand that each outdoor space is unique. When planning to create natural shade, it's essential to consider the specific conditions of your site. Soil type, available space, and sunlight exposure all play critical roles in determining the best tree species for your garden. We work closely with our clients to ensure the trees we select will thrive in their environment while providing the desired aesthetic and function.

Root Management

Managing tree roots is another important factor in maintaining a healthy garden. To ensure the roots of your shade trees don't encroach on other areas or structures, we recommend using root barrier material. This helps to contain the roots and prevent them from disrupting surrounding areas, keeping your garden looking tidy and manageable.

Different from Pleaching, but Similar in Concept

While pleaching involves training trees to form an elevated hedge-like structure, creating natural shade with trees is a different concept. Instead of framing trees into rigid lines, we allow their natural form to develop while offering strategic support through the use of pergolas or grouping techniques. The result is a softer, more organic shade solution that blends seamlessly with the landscape.
